Mathematics allows one to think critically when information is presented. Being a critical thinker not only prepares you to do mathematics but enables you to be an important part of society in its entirety. It enables someone to view a concept from a certain angle that some may not see right away and communicate through teamwork with facts that can prove that your point is valid. Being able to make connections with your daily life with any subject is crucial especially when teaching math. Math can help us make important decisions and perform everyday tasks. Things such as helping us to shop wisely, buy the right insurance, remodel a home within a budget, understand population growth, or even bet on winning the lottery are some of the any things that includes math. One issue that people run into is debt due to owning multiple credit cards or not paying off credit cards in the time frame given. If students are taught about interest and what it means to have simple or compound interests, then they would have a better understanding on how to better budget their finances. Likewise, different graphs and functions can be used to depict population growth whether it is exponential or not. Data through calculation can tell a lot about whether resources will be able to sustain the population, if the population increase or decrease and much more. It is my job as a future educator to ensure that abstract concepts get cemented to student’s life so they see it in the concrete and tangible so others can make their own connection. Math is a language we can use to explain the mysteries of the universe. It is not just about pondering imaginary numbers or calculating difficult equations but about making better daily decisions and leading richer, fuller lives. Mathematics is in everything, but we must dig to find it.
